Our own interpretation of the character snowman through film
|
Casting David as Snowman Karolina as Oryx Lovisa as Crake Heli as Jimmy's mother |
The IllustratorThe viewer’s first impression of the image can be summarized in two words; sadness and loneliness. These two emotions are reflected in the majority of the story of Oryx and Crake, especially the sections when the narrator
Snowman (also called Jimmy), describes his life as an adult on the shore. To show the living situation, as probably the only surviving human being, Snowman is standing on a broken tree stump, seen as a small sized figure, when compared to the other remains of the dead tree on the ground. On both sides of him, he’s surrounded with sharp spikes which symbolize all the difficulties and misery that we face during our lives. The dead tree can be seen as the “human life tree” which is broken, and therefore represents the human extinction on earth. The friendly, rounded stones are smooth but in reality they are also dead. The main thought with the sun was to show hope and life. One can interpret the sun, in the midpoint, as going down or is rising up. In this case, the sun is going down, which indicate decreased hope of life, and instead replaced with doubts. The importance of believing is still with Snowman though, that somewhere near the horizon there’s hope. Even though he’s aware of his destiny, he’s fighting for his survival day after day and feels needed by the Crackers. The ocean in the background gives depth and also the feeling of no life as far as the eye can see. This painting, which in general has dark colours, is therefore depicting a dull vision of the environment and the life in a lonely world. Author: Heli Lindeberg |
